Detailed Itinerary

Unique Horse Trails South Africa

Day 1: Arrival and introductory ride
You will be met at the Port Elizabeth airport and transferred to our tented camp in Kenton-on-Sea, which will serve as the home-base for your trail. We introduce you to your horse and take a short ride from the camp along the Kariega River. In the evening we will enjoy drinks and spectacular views over the river.

Day 2: Fish River to Port Alfred Coastline
After a hearty breakfast horses and riders are transferred to Fish River to start the first leg of your journey. The beach along this section is remote and spacious and the ride is normally quite fast with long canters between walks. The scenery is spectacular and the beaches deserted as we head to Port Alfred. If it is low tide we search for sea snails to sample later with the evening meal which is a delicacy with the locals. We cover about 35km of unspoilt beach and have a packed lunch along the way. In Port Alfred we arrive at a chalet where we enjoy drinks and a swim in the pool before dinner.

Day 3: Long rides and river crossing to Kenton-on-Sea
We set off after breakfast and we have to travel according to the tide. We pass Ship Rock at low tide and enjoy long, controlled canters to catch the tide for our first river crossing.
The route takes us to the Kariega River near Kenton-on-Sea, where we meet the backup vehicle and remove the saddles and prepare for the river crossing. You will be provided with a life jacket for the swim.

We saddle up again after the Kariega River and find a comfortable place to enjoy our picnic lunch. We take a relaxing ride along the river back to the Beachcomber Tented Camp where we relax to beautiful sunset views or take a walk to a hidden bay for sundowner drinks and a swim.

Day 4: Wildlife Safari
Today is a non riding day but it is a welcome rest from two hard riding days. We spend the day viewing some of Africa’s amazing wildlife in the Addo Elephant National Park, touring with a small bus. Animals that can be seen are lion, elephant, buffalo, zebra and many others. We return to Kenton-on-Sea in the afternoon.

Day 5: Explore the rocky coves and outcrops from Kenton-on-Sea to Cannon Rocks
We wake up to the sound of birds singing and have a delicious breakfast before riding out to the Bushman’s river. Here we remove the saddles and prepare for our second thrilling swim through the tidal river.
After tacking up, we enjoy more stunning beach canters and make our way up the rocky outcrops. At a hidden small bay between big outcrops of rock we take a break and look for sea shells among the thousands that get dumped here by the sea. We have a packed lunch on top of Diaz Cross (a memorial to the first European to round the tip of Africa). The views of the coastline here are spectacular.
This day’s ride is approximately 20km to the beach cottage in Cannon Rocks, where we unwind and enjoy a home-cooked meal.

Day 6: Exploring the dunes and our final river crossing
We set off after breakfast and head back along the coast. On this day we enjoy a slower pace of riding and we take time to explore the vast beach dunes on horseback. We find stone-age pottery in the ancient human middens left behind by the Khoi San, who were the original inhabitants of the area.
We arrive back at the Bushman’s river for our final swim and take a moment to relax on the spectacular beaches for our lunch, before winding back along the mountain path to the Tented camp. In the evenings we normally take a cold beverage and take a short walk to the beach or rocky outcrops overlooking the sea and watch the sun go down.

Day 7: Friday – A Horseback Safari experiencing Africa’s wildlife
This day we experience a game safari on horseback. We make our way to a nearby private game reserve where we have the chance to ride with Elephant, Rhino, Giraffe, Zebra, Cape Buffalo and many more. Here the scenery changes into rolling grasslands and forest with huge hills and a stunning view of the Kariega River.

We find a shady spot to have a picnic lunch with the option to take a dip in the river if the weather is good. The evening is spent back at the Beachcomber tented camp where we enjoy a traditional “braai” (South African style barbecue), and we eat around a large candle lit dining room table or in good weather we sit on the deck and enjoy the stars.

Day 8: Saturday – Our last ride
We do a short ride to say farewell to your faithful steed before ending the trail and heading back home.

Please note: The route is subject to change based on tides, weather conditions, availability and logistics.

Helpful Horse Trail Information

Required Skill & Fitness Level:
To make the most of our horseback trails, we recommend that riders are healthy and have a relatively good level of fitness (we’ll help you get fitter while on the ride!).  Riding with us needs a degree of physical fitness, as these rides are not recommended for inexperience or unfit riders (we do offer beach rides for those who feel like doing shorter rides and completely experienced enough for the longer trails. The Beachcomber trail includes different types of riding including long canters on sand, to relaxed walks with the wildlife we encounter along the way. We also swim with our horses through two rivers and do a few shallow crossings.

Our Horses:
Our horses are a hardy mix of Arabian crosses. They are safe, well mannered and are very lively when needed but also happy to plod along with inexperienced riders. Our saddles are comfortable trail riding saddles and we use soft bits on all our horses.

The Tack and Gear:
We use trail saddles, made locally, designed for the comfort of both horse and rider alike. We recommend you wear half or full chaps with comfortable riding boots and a light weight riding helmet, preferably with good ventilation. We do have a limited number of chaps and helmets at the stables, but we highly recommend that you bring your own helmet and chaps.

Private transfers are available from Port Elizabeth or East London. We can also book you on a scheduled transfer.

It’s important to spend the evenings in comfortable accommodation after long days in the saddle. You will stay over in a beautifully located tented camp on the banks of the Kariega River which will be your base. Our tented camp offers comfortable rooms with views over the river. Meals are served on the central deck. This is also where we relax after our rides to enjoy a drink around the camp fire.

We pride ourselves on the wholesome meals we provide our guests. From breakfast, lunch and dinner, as well as snacks along the way, we cater for the active traveler.
